Lights Releases Alt-Pop Fever Dream “WHITE PAPER PALM TREES” and Brooding Dark Wave Counterpart “SURFACE TENSION”

Electro-pop innovator Lights has dropped two contrasting new singles—“WHITE PAPER PALM TREES” and “SURFACE TENSION”—from her upcoming album A6. Both tracks, written and produced by Lights herself, highlight the duality at the heart of the project. “WHITE PAPER PALM TREES” taps into the nostalgic, synth-laced sound reminiscent of her early work, while “SURFACE TENSION” ventures into darker, moodier territory with influences from dark wave and new wave, including a striking use of German lyrics as a nod to the album’s inspirations. Unsure of which direction to lead with, Lights chose to release both simultaneously, letting fans decide which side of her artistry they resonate with most.
The dual release not only showcases the musical range of A6 but extends into its visual storytelling. Lights directed and edited both music videos to play in sync, designed to interact when viewed side by side—each telling a piece of a larger story, depending on which volume you turn up.
