Hamilton’s Psych-Pop Band The Crowleys Release New Single “Making Friendly”
If we have seen any genre that is making a major resurgence in today’s indie scene it is definitely psychedelic rock. On our latest dive into this psychedelic side of the indie pool we have “Making Friendly”, the latest single from the Canadian psych-rock band The Crowleys. A rather talented group of musicians, the Hamilton-based band consists of musicians Cohen Wylie (guitar, vocals), Stuart Downie (drums, vocals), Giulianna Frontini (vocals) and brothers Justyn (synth, guitar) and Collin Horlick (bass, bass synth). Formed by a number of members while still attending high school, The Crowleys spent most of their early years exploring psych-rock instrumentals to use as their primary sound. The band built up a solid reputation for putting on entertaining and astounding live performances, which they would expand upon after relocating to the Greater Toronto area. After many long nights traveling between gigs, they were introduced to their primary vocalist Giulianna Frontini who has also help refine the band’s raw sound.
Now back on their home turf and focused on the future of the band, The Crowleys are primed and ready to add plenty of new tracks to their repertoire. Taking a major departure from the guitar-heavy initial style they were exploring, “Making Friendly” puts Giulianna’s ethereal vocals front, center, and ready to lead. The Crowleys accomplish a blend of styles that we didn’t expect to hear, combining elements from psych-rock, disco, with an extra dose of gothic ambiance to froth up the head. Not only is their sound unique, but any listener can tell in each note that The Crowleys absolutely love what they are making right now. While we equate the modern psych-rock wave of popularity to bands like Tame Impala, The Crowleys could easily help push the psych-pop movement forward in the next few years.
