From Astoria to the Alleyways of 80s LA: Beta Voids Channel the Spirit of West Coast Punk on Scrape It Off
Astoria, Oregon’s Beta Voids are tearing through the space between early LA hardcore and no wave chaos on their debut EP, Scrape It Off. It’s loud, messy, and completely unapologetic—twin vocals from Mandy Grant and Carrie Beveridge trade shrieks, sneers, and sly hooks over jagged guitars and screeching sax. Each track feels like its own little riot, a sweaty, half-lit snapshot of teenage rebellion, with the smell of beer, hairspray, and old xerox ink hanging in the air. This isn’t a throwback; it’s a scene that never really died, just moved to a damp coastal basement and kept raging.
The EP is pure adrenaline, nodding to Redd Kross, Black Flag, and James Chance while spinning off into its own chaotic orbit. “Baby’s In Detox” is a frantic, two-minute collision of sax and tangled guitar, “M-O-T-H-E-R” hits with grimy Iggy & The Stooges energy, and “Brain Malfunction” fuses Minutemen twitchiness with Angry Samoans fury. Every song is a sprint—jagged, frantic, but packed with hooks that sneak in behind your ribs. It’s punk with dirt under its nails, messy but magnetic, alive with imperfection and spontaneity.
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by bassist Mike Vasquez at Sweatbox Northwest, the band is captured in their natural state: loud, fast, and slightly out of control. Dan McClure’s guitar cuts like broken glass, Seth Howard (and Mickey Calavera) keep the beat locked in, and Alpha Rasmussen’s sax wails like a ghost hovering over the pit. Scrape It Off isn’t nostalgia—it’s punk inherited, twisted, and set on fire. Dropping November 19 via Hovercraft Records, Beta Voids are already taking the chaos on the road across Mexico, doing what punk was always meant to do: sweaty, reckless, and gloriously real.
