Forget Them Wendy Chase the “Next Big Thing” on Tongue-in-Cheek New Single
Blending infectious indie pop hooks with the fuzzy guitars and rebellious energy of 90s grunge, Forget Them Wendy are bringing a fresh spin to nostalgic alternative rock. Made up of Newcastle-based songwriter Laura James and Edinburgh-born producer and guitarist Oliver Price, the duo draw inspiration from The Cranberries, Smashing Pumpkins, and The Breeders, creating a sound that’s equal parts melodic, gritty, and unapologetically playful. Taking their name from a line in J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, the pair embrace the messy realities of growing up, navigating relationships, and figuring out who you are along the way. Their chemistry is just as entertaining as their music, mixing emotional honesty with sharp humor and plenty of self-awareness. With Laura’s award-winning songwriting and Oliver’s production credits spanning Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, M.I.A., and Lucy Rose, the duo bring an impressive creative background to their guitar-driven sound.
Following the release of their debut EP, Forget Them Wendy have quickly gained momentum, with “Dead in the Water” earning a spot among BBC Introducing’s Tracks of 2025 and their recent single “Plug It In” landing BBC Introducing’s Track of the Week. Now working toward their debut album, the duo are releasing songs one at a time while hilariously overthinking the final track order. With catchy melodies, grungy guitars, and a healthy dose of existential chaos, Forget Them Wendy are proving that growing up doesn’t mean you have to stop having fun.
Taking aim at the endless pursuit of internet fame, Forget Them Wendy return with “Next Big Thing,” a catchy, sarcastic, and brilliantly self-aware indie rock anthem that pokes fun at influencer culture and society’s obsession with becoming the next viral sensation. Packed with the duo’s signature wit and 90s-inspired alternative energy, the track explores a world where everyone is chasing attention, building personal brands, and desperately trying to stay relevant. Songwriter Laura James admits that constantly sharing their lives on social media isn’t exactly their style, prompting guitarist Oliver Price to joke that it’s a shame considering how ridiculously fashionable they are. Beneath the humor, the song takes a sharp look at the modern music industry, where algorithms, viral moments, and online popularity can sometimes overshadow the music itself. Rather than preaching about the problem, Forget Them Wendy embrace the absurdity, delivering a track that’s just as entertaining as the culture it’s mocking.
Of course, the biggest irony is that “Next Big Thing” could end up becoming the band’s breakout hit. Oliver jokingly imagines a future Glastonbury performance where thousands of fans disappear immediately after hearing the song, leaving nobody behind for their more experimental material. It’s a hilariously cynical take on fleeting fame, wrapped in infectious melodies, grungy guitars, and plenty of personality. Forget Them Wendy might not be chasing the spotlight, but with a song this catchy, the spotlight might just come looking for them.
