With more and more subgenres popping up to their moment in the spotlight, we are glad to finally see a wider variety of music come across our desk. Today we are wading across the ocean for a chance to check out “Rick F***in Dalton”, a brand new single from the dream-pop duo Moon Panda. First off, this is a great name for a dream/synth pop project and we might already be addicted. Composed of Californian songwriter Maddy Myers and Danish guitarist Gustav Moltke, Moon Panda has been carefully working throughout the last few years to craft this project that they could be proud of. Moon Panda crafted their own audience out of the mold of new psychedelic and synth fans, even having two tracks reach The Hype Machine’s “Most Popular” chart back in 2018. These two performers are an interesting pair to see as they balance their long-distance marriage in between crafting the Moon Panda identity.
“We’ve had (and continue to have) a hell of a time staying in the same country, spending many months apart with no clue when we’ll be able to be together again has been a huge part of both our relationship and our music.” – Maddy Myers
Now if you haven’t heard of Moon Panda before, you are seriously in for a treat. The first single off of their upcoming MAKE WELL EP, “Rick F****** Dalton” is an audible western surreal experience loosly inspired by Tarentino’s latest film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Myers explains: “It’s really inspired by the vibe of that film, about wanting to take the one you love most with you and hit the open road, sea, sky, wherever. Just, freedom.” The track is quite the musical journey, letting the guitar guide us into a semi-realistic atmosphere that feels intangible at best. However, with Myers’s vocal performance the track is transformed into a gritty cinematic soundtrack that we need in our own neo-western film. With Moon Panda’s latest move to Fierce Panda Records, we can’t wait to see how their career will grow and change.
