Darude Reworks ‘Sandstorm’ For Its First Official Remix in Over 20 Years
More than 25 years after its original release, Darude returns to one of electronic music’s most recognisable records with “Sandstorm Storm 25 Mix,” the track’s first official remix in over two decades. Reworked by Darude himself, the new version revisits the unmistakable melody, driving rhythm and chord progression that have made “Sandstorm” so difficult to reinterpret without losing its identity. Rather than completely reinventing the track, Darude approaches it from the perspective of the person who knows its structure best, refreshing its energy while preserving the elements that have made it instantly recognisable across generations.
With more than 1 billion global streams, multiple Gold and Platinum certifications, and over 322 million YouTube views, “Sandstorm” has long transcended dance music. From appearances at the FIFA World Cup, NFL, Copa América and 2024 Paris Olympics to its enduring role in internet meme culture and games including EA Sports, Fortnite and DOTA, the track has become a global shorthand for pure adrenaline. “Sandstorm Storm 25 Mix” celebrates that legacy while giving Darude the rare chance to find something new inside a record that has spent decades becoming part of popular culture.
“Sandstorm has such an incredible life of its own and, honestly, I’m just grateful people are still dancing to it. So many talented people have taken their own swing at it, while a lot of producers I admire have told me it’s simply too risky to touch. But this one is personal. It’s the track that started everything for me and my career, and after 25 years, it felt like the right time to take it somewhere new. That, and to see how hard I can make it hit on a dancefloor in 2026!”
Fittingly, the first official remix of “Sandstorm” in more than 20 years comes from Darude himself. The Storm 25 Mix began as a live rework created for his STORM 25 worldwide anniversary tour, which celebrated selections from across his 25-year catalogue. Rather than simply updating the original production, Darude first rebuilt “Sandstorm” from scratch, recreating everything from its hi-hats to its Supersaw pads before carefully reshaping the track for modern dancefloors. The iconic central melody remains intact, but it is now surrounded by heavier big-room energy, melodic techno influences in the drop, and orchestral textures through the breakdown.
For Darude, revisiting the track was both a technical challenge and a personal one. After decades of unofficial edits and producers warning that “Sandstorm” was simply too iconic to touch, he felt the 25th anniversary was the right moment to take the song somewhere new himself. The result preserves the DNA of the record that launched his career while pushing it toward a larger, harder-hitting sound built for clubs and festivals in 2026.
