The story takes place in the world of Remnant, which is filled with supernatural forces and shadowy creatures known as the “Creatures of Grimm”. Prior to the events of the series, mankind waged a battle of survival against the Grimm before discovering the power of a mysterious element called Dust, which allowed them to fight back against the monsters. In the present day, Dust is used to power magical abilities and weapons. Those who use these abilities to battle the Grimm are known as Huntsmen or Huntresses. The series focuses on four girls, each with her own unique weapon and powers. Together, they form team RWBY at Beacon Academy in the city of Vale, where they are trained to become Huntresses alongside team CRDL (pronounced “cardinal”) and team JNPR (pronounced “juniper”).

I wasn’t interested in Rwby (especially since I don’t consider this kind of animation in the anime realm) but an associate of mine recommended it. As somewhat of a fan of Rooster Teeth (now that Meg Turney is apart of them I’m even a bigger fan) I decided to take a look.]\ (THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR VOL. 1 OF RWBY).

There are many things I like about Rwby. I do like the characters quite a bit, especially the two main teams of students. The character designs (especially their weapons) is obviously the high point of the show. I mean come on, a scythe that’s also a sniper rifle? How about a chick that uses “dust” in a rapier to use magic? What is going on here? All I can tell you is enjoy the fight scenes because they are obviously the best thing about the show.

Now this is the part I am excited for. i know Rwby is an independent effort, so I’m not going to be too harsh on it. First, I want to point out that the animation style is incredibly western (which is why I don’t consider this anime). It appears to just be some clunky 3d computer animation. Second, the voice acting is just terrible. I know they try their hardest, but I don’t think it pays off for all the characters. Outsource why don’t you?

PROS:

  •  Character design.
  • Weapon design.
  • Fight Scenes.
  • Soundtrack.

CONS:

  •  Voice acting.
  • Animation.
  • Too many known tropes.

SCORE: 6.0 / 10
