Allen Dobb Writes Toward Understanding and Shared Humanity on “At the Bridge,” | New Album ‘The Afterlife Sessions’ Out April 24th
Allen Dobb is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose music blends country, folk, and roots traditions with a modern, literate sensibility. Praised by the Edmonton Journal as “one of the finest and most literate tunesmiths in this country,” Dobb’s songs are known for their authenticity, emotional depth, and strong sense of place, capturing landscapes, histories, and human experiences with clarity and nuance.
He has performed at major folk festivals including Edmonton, Winnipeg, Mariposa, and Bumbershoot, and has toured the U.K., bringing his thoughtful storytelling to audiences at home and abroad. His albums—Horses and Hills, Bottomland, Rosetown, and Alone Together—have been recognized for their depth and sincerity, with Americana Highways calling his songs “heart searching and touching, strong and vibrant.” Dobb’s work consistently bridges traditional roots music with contemporary literate songwriting, establishing him as a compelling voice in Canadian folk and Americana.
Singer-songwriter Allen Dobb unveils his new single “At the Bridge,” a Canadiana-leaning folk and roots song inspired by the life of James Teit, a Shetland-born, self-taught anthropologist who built deep relationships with Indigenous communities in British Columbia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The track, the first to be shared from Dobb’s forthcoming album The Afterlife Sessions (out April 24th, 2026), was sparked by a suggestion from a friend after a performance by Dobb’s longtime collaborator John Gogo, whose work often brings historical figures vividly to life. Drawing on Wendy Wickwire’s biography of Teit, Dobb sought to transform the largely unknown anthropologist’s life story into song, blending historical curiosity with personal reflection.
To capture the essence of Teit’s legacy, Dobb visited Merritt, British Columbia, where Teit is buried and a small archive preserves his history. The experience, along with stories from a friend connected to Indigenous communities in the Nicola Valley, informed the lyrics and emotional tone of the song. Musically, “At the Bridge” unfolds with a gentle, flowing rhythm that ultimately resolves into a quiet acceptance, highlighted by Ryland Moranz’s playing on Dobb’s 1927 Martin 00-21 guitar, whose warm, resonant tone perfectly complements the intimate storytelling. The single exemplifies Dobb’s talent for literate, place-based songwriting, bringing forgotten histories to life with empathy and musical nuance.
