STARRING: Robert Redford

DIRECTOR: J. C. Chandor

GENRE: Survival,

YEAR: 2013

COUNTRY: United States, Canada

Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner’s intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

Robert Redford in All Is Lost

While this is one of those films that I knew I wasn’t going to like going in, I did actually find something I liked about it. The film was absolutely beautiful, most notably the water. It was just so damn realistic and fluid that it mesmerized me. I know it is such a small thing to point out, but it is what did it for me this time. Yet its kind of a thing with me, in all my projects water looks real!

Okay I get it. Robert Redford is a fantastic actor. He is definitely one actor that I actually enjoy watching when I go to the movies. He normally nails every role he is given and just performs so damn well. Not for me, not this time. It was definitely in correlation with the slow pacing of the film and the general disinterest I had in the film. I only watched this one for Mr. Redford, and I just wasn’t interested. Sorry.

PROS:

  • Robert Redford’s performance.
  • Perfect “lost at sea” film.

CONS:

  • Sounds.
  • Lack of dialogue.
  • General lack of disinterest.

SCORE: 5.5 / 10
