Adam C Tenenbaum of Giant Metal Crickets Releases New Ambient Album ‘If There Are No Clouds’
Adam C. Tenenbaum is a Northern California-based producer, composer, and experimental guitarist known for blending electronic, rock, and avant-garde sounds. He first gained recognition in the mid-2000s with house music releases later working extensively with Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead) and Dead & Company, co-producing tracks and creating sounds for their iconic “Drums & Space” segments. Tenenbaum toured with the band, performing live DJ sets alongside Hart and contributing to several of the drummer’s solo projects.
While at Hart’s Studio X, Tenenbaum teamed up with producer Michal Menert to form the project Wooden Flowers, releasing their sophomore album Goldtrails. He also leads the experimental project Giant Metal Crickets, which recently dropped its third album, explico. Tenenbaum’s versatile sound design work includes contributions to Oteil Burbridge’s A Lovely View of Heaven, Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance, and various film trailers and TV shows, cementing his reputation as a boundary-pushing artist across genres.
Producer and experimental guitarist Adam C. Tenenbaum has announced a new collection of ambient compositions developed slowly through restrained improvisation and careful refinement. The project was inspired during a backpacking trip through Spain, where long days of travel and deep listening — particularly to the music of Brian Eno and Ryuichi Sakamoto — sparked the idea of creating music that could provide a similar sense of calm, focus, and internal space for listeners. Early recordings began beside frozen lakes during a stark Colorado winter and were later completed in the forests and fields of Sebastopol, California, shaping the album into a quiet meditation on landscape, solitude, and transformation.
Across the record, Tenenbaum blends drone-like ambient passages with slowly evolving, guitar-driven soundscapes that unfold in subtle, atmospheric layers. His background collaborating with Oteil Burbridge and working alongside Mickey Hart and Dead & Company — particularly on the band’s exploratory “Drums & Space” performances — informs the project’s immersive, exploratory approach to sound. The result is an album designed less as a traditional listening experience and more as an environment listeners can inhabit.
