Total Fucking Darkness Transcends Genre with “Desolation Boys,” an Anthem of Electronic Pop Rebellion

Total Fucking Darkness is the ultimate chaotic supergroup, blending the talents of Torquil Campbell (Stars), Stephen Ramsay (Young Galaxy), and English studio wizard Tom McFall (known for his work with REM, Bloc Party, and Regina Spektor). Together, they create music that’s equal parts plastic pop, nihilistic handbag house, and razor-sharp absurdity. Their latest single, “Desolation Boys,” is a wild ride through throbbing synth basslines, relentless drum machines, and warped textures—all wrapped in McFall’s polished but delightfully unhinged production. Campbell’s dramatic croon and Ramsay’s melodic touch bring a theatrical edge to the track’s dance-floor-ready chaos.

Visually, Total Fucking Darkness leans into a post-apocalyptic club aesthetic—DIY grunge meets neon decadence. Picture late-night warehouse raves in a dystopian future, with glitchy VHS visuals, torn velvet curtains, and anarchic fashion that feels both campy and deadly serious. “Desolation Boys” is an anthem for the end times, filled with biting irony and infectious energy, where you can dance while the world crumbles around you.

“Desolation Boys” was born from a manic 72-hour writing spree, with Tom McFall flying in from London to join Torquil Campbell and Stephen Ramsay in a volatile burst of creativity. The result is messy, raw, and gloriously unpolished—a chaotic anthem for three middle-aged men with nothing left to lose. Written in the final hours of the session, the track thrives on instinct and spontaneity, blending razor-sharp humor with an unfiltered vocal take, where Campbell’s mid-chorus shout of “go fuck yourself” feels like both a personal exorcism and a battle cry.

The song reflects Total Fucking Darkness’s fearless rejection of polish and convention, diving headfirst into themes of futility, class war absurdity, and the thrill of embracing life’s chaos. With their mantra of “Maximum Creative Violence Immediately,” TFD delivers something completely unhinged yet thrilling—a reminder that when everything is pointless, the only thing left to do is make it BANG.
