They Might Be Giants The World Is to Dig LP Out Today | Announce New THE BIGGER SHOW TOUR Fall Dates On Sale Next Week

Originally beginning as a Dial-A-Song service back in 1982, They Might Be Giants have become major players in the alternative music world over the last 39 years. With two Grammy’s under their belt as well as twenty-three albums in their discography, They Might Be Giants are seasoned veterans and leaders of the alternative world. If you haven’t explored any number of their albums, you’ve definitely heard their music through their numerous invasions of your TV, with original themes and incidental music to numerous shows and commercials  Fans of TMBG can actually experience their original Dial-A-Song through the FREE Dial-A-Song smartphone app (iPhone / Android) that adds a new song every single day. They Might Be Giants have always been outside-of-the-box thinkers.

“This album, like our first album, was all made by the same people at the same time in the same place. It has its own musical universe. Even as songs pull apart and get further afield, it became naturally cohesive. Our most successful records hang together in very natural ways, and this album has that continuity. “Very early on, we admired bands that had short songs that said what they had to say and finished. There was this movement in the mid-20th century to write confessional poems full of very specific personal emotion, but I want to write about geostationary orbits. That would be an interesting poem for me. And speaking for Flansburgh, there’s something beautifully opaque and elliptical about his recent lyrical ideas.”

The World Is to Dig finds They Might Be Giants doing what they’ve always done best: treating music like a playground where anything can become a song if you tilt it the right way. John Linnell and John Flansburgh don’t really stick to one lane—they jump between styles, ideas, and odd little lyrical obsessions, letting everything collide until it turns into something new. The record feels fast and loose in that way, but still carefully shaped underneath, full of short, sharp songs that move quickly and don’t overstay their welcome.

What holds it all together is the way the two of them work together—writing separately, then pulling each other’s ideas into a shared space where things get reshaped and slightly warped in the best way. There’s no real interest here in nostalgia or fitting into a genre box; it’s more about following whatever idea is interesting in the moment and seeing where it goes. The end result feels cohesive not because it’s uniform, but because it’s unmistakably them—curious, a little weird, and always in motion.
