Talented NY Singer/Songwriter Mae Krell Explores Loss + Heartbreak Folk Pop Single “colorblind”
Since quarantining for a year was an unpredictable struggle for almost everyone, we all found our own ways to pass the time and still move forward. On our latest dive into the indie pool we are checking out “colorblind”, the latest single from Mae Krell. While Krell is currently on a new musical journey after a two-year hiatus, Krell has worn many different hats in the music industry. From taking professional pictures for Rolling Stone and RGA to founding both online music publication Tongue Tied Magazine and the more recent Bitch MGMT multimedia PR agency, Krell racks up career milestones left and right. While Krell is now taking it one day at a time as an artist, their ambition knows no boundaries. At just 22 years of age, Krell is wise and more musically mature than many of her peers.
“I wrote ‘colorblind’ in the midst of what I thought was going to be the end of a relationship with the first girl I ever truly fell in love with,” Mae says of the inspiration behind the single. “I’ll be the first to admit that I feel everything too much, but during the couple of days that this was going on, I really felt like the world was ending. I was wildly sad while also being very restless in a way that I had never experienced before.”
If there is a trend/sound that is making its way back into more popular genres that we drastically overlook, it is folk music. Hell, I listen to folk music almost on a daily basis yet we very rarely cover artists who include more folksy elements into their work…it’s a damn shame. While the subject of “colorblind” was a very common occurrence last year, the end of a relationship where you were safe and thought you had it all, Krell’s arching vocal work builds on the core emotions hidden within the lyrics. Using folksy sliding guitars as a vehicle, Krell emits the pain and emotions they experienced through quarantine and the loss they were experiencing. However, instead of going full folksy and drowning in those emotions, Krell incorporates a dose of modern indie pop that gives a slight slimmer of hope on the horizon. That injection of pop changes the tone and meaning of the song, shifting perspectives to looking back at the highlights of the relationship and smiling through the pain.
