Singer/Songwriter Emilia Ali Drops Raw “Girls Like You” EP + New “Girls Like You” Music Video!
Once you strip back the elaborate productions, indie pop music can still be emotional and personally transformative. On our latest to Ultra Music we are checking out “Girls Like You”, the latest sing;e/music video from Emilia Ali. Introducing herself out onto the scene back in 2016, the Boston-based fresh graduate of Berklee College of Music lent her vocal talents to VALNTN’s global hit “Can’t Let Go”, netting over 20 million online streams. Not bad for your first feature huh? Utilizing that momentum, Ali released her debut EP Dreamland that ended up charting at #24 on the iTunes Pop Chart. Since then Ali has lent her vocal chops to a wider range of artists including dwilly’s “ADD” and “Love is Scary”, as well as co-writing and featuring on Micky Valen’s “ur perfect and I hate it”. With every collaboration Ali joins, the further her reach expands. Her recent successes led her to join the Ultra music family earlier in 2021 as well as releasing her latest Girls Like You EP with the aid of a major label.
We cover a fair amount of indie-pop here at Modern Neon, so it may take an extra step to stay on our radar. With the mega wave of indie-pop that is holding the indie world hostage, you have to wade for a bit to discover something intriguing. Ali’s latest effort, Girls Like You, caught our attention when we were in one of our more introspective moods. The title track from the EP, “Girls Like You” is a raw and explorative ballad into a rather tough subject that many women still deal with to this day. Originally written when she was younger, the track explores the levels of internalized misogyny that Ali experienced throughout her past + while growing in today’s industry. The track’s music video pushes the track’s themes further, as Ali grows into the true version of who she wants to be, even going as far as to visually draw pictures of women she wants to be like. You can feel her emotions within every note and lyric, almost in an invasive way…as if we are seeing something that was kept hidden from the world.
