Scotland’s Mixed Signals Step Forward with Expansive Rock Anthem “Different Frequencies”
Mixed Signals are an alternative rock band from Ayr, Scotland, formed in early 2024 after frontman Ben Gardiner pulled together university friends James Armstrong, Leon Calder, and Nathan Christie to back him for a charity gig. What was meant to be a one-off performance quickly evolved into a full-fledged project, sparked by natural chemistry and a shared instinct for songwriting. The band took their name from a track by The Night Café, a fleeting favourite that ultimately became the banner for their emerging identity.
Drawing inspiration from the melodic drive of Inhaler, the emotional punch of Biffy Clyro, and the atmospheric depth of Radiohead and Muse, Mixed Signals blend soaring hooks with driving riffs and heartfelt storytelling. Each member brings a distinct strength — from cinematic guitar lines to melodic bass and urgent drumming — resulting in a sound that balances vulnerability with energy while carving out something distinctly their own.
“It’s about being stuck in something that isn’t healthy, but staying because you’re scared of what life looks like without that person. I think a lot of people will recognise themselves in that feeling. Unintentionally, our music often centres on the highs and lows of relationships. There are countless ways one person can make you feel in a single day, and most people can relate to that swing between heartbreak and hope.” – Ben Gardiner
Their new single, “Different Frequencies,” sees Mixed Signals stepping confidently into a bigger, more polished sound. Co-written with Callum Thomas of Dancing on Tables, the track started as a soft acoustic idea before evolving through experimentation and studio work in Liverpool with producer Tayte Nickols. What began as an intimate sketch was gradually reshaped into a dynamic modern rock anthem, complete with driving drums, expansive guitars, and a powerful, cathartic chorus.
Lyrically, the song explores a relationship held together by fear rather than true connection — two people emotionally out of sync but reluctant to let go. Drawing from personal experience, the band captures the tension of staying when you know something isn’t working, balancing vulnerability with an anthemic edge that highlights their growth both musically and emotionally.
