Oakland Power Pop Craftsmen THE GOODS Preview New LP With “Summer’s Almost Gone”
For longtime fans of The Goods, Goodbye Summertime feels like a natural evolution rather than a dramatic departure. The jangling guitars, infectious hooks, and rich harmonies that have defined the project remain firmly intact, but the songwriting and arrangements reach further than ever before. Recorded primarily in Good’s Oakland studio with contributions from longtime collaborators Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen, and Ian McBrayer, the album expands beyond power pop into psychedelia, folk rock, sunshine pop, and more adventurous studio experimentation, all while keeping melody at its core.
That broader sound reflects Good’s years as a staple of Oakland’s indie scene through projects including Ryli, Joel Cusumano, Yea-Ming and The Rumours, and Cocktails. Drawing inspiration from British Invasion pop, classic guitar-driven songwriting, and the Bay Area’s thriving independent music community, Goodbye Summertime balances nostalgia with a distinctly modern perspective. Led by the hook-filled single “Summer’s Almost Gone,” the album feels less like a reinvention than a songwriter confidently embracing the full range of influences that have shaped his musical identity.
Oakland power pop outfit The Goods return with “Summer’s Almost Gone,” the first single from their upcoming album Goodbye Summertime, due September 16 via Dandy Boy Records. Less than a year after their debut LP Don’t Spoil the Fun, songwriter Rob Good expands the band’s sound, blending Beatles-inspired psychedelia, jangling folk rock, sunshine pop, and classic power pop into a richer, more ambitious collection. Written during a period of personal and creative growth, the album builds on The Goods’ melodic foundation while pushing into new sonic territory.
Driven by chiming guitars, lush harmonies, and an infectious backbeat, “Summer’s Almost Gone” captures the bittersweet feeling of watching time slip away. Inspired by the idea that “now is all we have,” the song encourages listeners to embrace the present before it’s gone. Set against the backdrop of a constantly changing Bay Area, where neighborhoods, venues, and familiar places seem to disappear overnight, the single serves as both a nostalgic summer anthem and an inviting first look at the broader themes explored throughout Goodbye Summertime.
