Oakland Melody Merchants THE GOODS Unearth Power Pop Gold With New LP Goodbye Summertime
For longtime fans of The Goods, Goodbye Summertime feels like a natural evolution rather than a dramatic departure. The jangling guitars, infectious hooks, and rich harmonies that have defined the project remain firmly intact, but the songwriting and arrangements reach further than ever before. Recorded primarily in Good’s Oakland studio with contributions from longtime collaborators Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen, and Ian McBrayer, the album expands beyond power pop into psychedelia, folk rock, sunshine pop, and more adventurous studio experimentation, all while keeping melody at its core.
That broader sound reflects Good’s years as a staple of Oakland’s indie scene through projects including Ryli, Joel Cusumano, Yea-Ming and The Rumours, and Cocktails. Drawing inspiration from British Invasion pop, classic guitar-driven songwriting, and the Bay Area’s thriving independent music community, Goodbye Summertime balances nostalgia with a distinctly modern perspective. Led by the hook-filled single “Summer’s Almost Gone,” the album feels less like a reinvention than a songwriter confidently embracing the full range of influences that have shaped his musical identity.
Power pop outfit The Goods return September 16 with Goodbye Summertime, their sophomore LP on Dandy Boy Records. Arriving less than a year after Don’t Spoil the Fun, the album finds songwriter Rob Good expanding the band’s sound through Beatles-inspired psychedelia, Brian Wilson-style balladry, sunshine pop, jangling folk rock, and classic guitar pop. Produced largely by Good in his Oakland studio, the record moves freely between styles while staying grounded in sharp hooks, stacked harmonies, and melodic songwriting. For fans of The Lemon Twigs, Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, Young Guv, The Apples In Stereo, The Raspberries, and Sharp Pins, Goodbye Summertime reflects Good’s years in the Bay Area underground and the changes he has witnessed across its venues, neighborhoods, and music scene.
That sense of transition runs throughout the album, with songs exploring memory, fleeting moments, new love, and the passage of time. “Summer’s Almost Gone” captures the urgency of appreciating the present, “Minor Key” mourns what has already disappeared, and “Driving” looks back on the freedom and uncertainty of younger years. “Wing” embraces the vulnerability of new romance, while closer “Sleepytime” brings everything together with swelling harmonies and a reflective sense of release. Rather than dwelling on nostalgia, Goodbye Summertime is ultimately about accepting change and deciding which pieces of the past are worth carrying forward.
