Noir-Pop Band Vox Rea Drop Sophomore Single “Sinatra”, Injecting Classical Into Pop!
The deeper we dive into the indie world, the more unique acts keep popping up on our radar. After our latest dive, we are checking out “Sinatra”, the latest single from the neo-noir band known as Vox Rea. Originally formed by Kate Kurdyak (lead vocals/piano/guitar/bass), her sister Lauren Kurdyak (vocals/piano), and childhood best friend Kaitlyn Hansen-Boucher (vocals/percussion), these three talented musicians joined forces back in 2015 known as The Katherines. The band received plenty of success leading up to their initial 2017 release To Bring You My Heart, with the album eventually earning over a million online streams and features on numerous indie playlists. The band’s enchanting performances slayed audiences around the country, earning praise from listeners and critic playmakers alike. Having added Berklee-alum Mitchell Schaumberg (vocals/piano/guitar/bass) to the roster and embracing the Vox Rea pseudonym, their sophomore effort has arrived.
“Sinatra is the first song we wrote as a band while we were living together in Toronto. Though we didn’t know it at the time, this song marked a turning point in our lives and the beginning of Vox Rea. Sinatra is not a conventional single but in the year when all bets are off we decided it was time to follow our instincts and put out the music that we love. This song is an ode to nihilism and the fantasy that life will be better when you’re anywhere but where you are. To the stars!” – Kate Kurdyak
We will put this out there right out of the gate, the Vox Rea sound may not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you embrace a spectrum of genres across the board in your normal rotation, then the band’s classical stylings will tickle your eardrums. Both Kate and Lauren add more emphasis on violins and pianos, leaning on their classical backgrounds. Kaitlyn is an accomplished violinist in her own right, so we would be surprised if she strayed away from her bread and butter. “Sinatra” is a rather unique song to fit into the Vox Rea catalog, putting all members of the band’s skills out on the internet for those willing to give them a shot. Looking at both releases the band dropped so far, it will definitely be difficult for the band to slot into just one genre.
