New Jersey Rock ’N’ Roll Duo TALL DAYS Bring Downtown Dirt Back Across The Hudson On New LP Breakers
New Jersey rock ’n’ roll duo Tall Days return with Breakers, their first new album in seven years. Made up of Graham Hartke on vocals and guitar and Joe DeAngelus on drums, the Montclair pair expand their stripped-down sound without losing its raw edge, blending garage rock, ’60s and ’70s British rock, bluesy riffs and modern indie fuzz. Recorded at their own Snack Factory studio between March 2024 and February 2026, the album keeps the guitars loud and drums heavy while introducing saxophone, Hammond organ, recorder and percussion into the mix. The result carries the grit of old New York rock across the Hudson, drawing on the same blown-out energy associated with artists like Jack White, The Black Keys and Ty Segall while remaining rooted in Tall Days’ own North Jersey identity.
At its core, Breakers is an album about contrast, balancing anger and frustration with optimism, family and connection. Songs like “Gaslight Bomb,” “Destroy,” “Night” and “On Edge” lean into confrontation and instability, while “She Is My Girl,” “Humanity” and “NYC Rock ’N’ Roll” find warmth and reasons to keep believing in people. That duality is especially clear in “Destroy,” written from the fallout of a bad breakup, and “She Is My Girl,” Hartke’s joyful tribute to his young daughter, which adds layers of percussion and family background vocals to the duo’s usual setup. Across the record, Tall Days prove that their simple formula — two musicians, loud amps, big drums and strong hooks — still leaves plenty of room to get louder, stranger and more personal.
Tall Days brought in a wide group of collaborators to finish Breakers while keeping the record’s DIY core intact. Mixing was handled by Brent Kolatado, Matt Maroulakos, Rubin Nizri and Hartke himself, with Bill Skibbe mastering the album at Third Man Mastering. Their combined experience helped give the record added weight and clarity without smoothing away its distortion, grit or live-wire energy. Arriving seven years after the band’s last new music, Breakers also builds on a long history in the New Jersey and New York rock underground, where Tall Days have earned airplay from WFMU, SiriusXM and Q104.3 and landed songs on shows including Lucifer and Difficult People.
Through all of it, the band’s appeal remains straightforward: two musicians seeing how much noise, melody and movement they can wring out of rock ’n’ roll without losing the rough edges. Breakers expands that formula while staying rooted in the same scrappy spirit, balancing anger with optimism and bigger arrangements with stripped-down instincts. It carries forward some of the grit and attitude of old New York rock without simply living in the past, proving that even as venues disappear and scenes change, rock ’n’ roll remains stubbornly difficult to kill.
