Nashville’s J Duran Shares Indie Tale of Spiteful Hope in “Sweet Tooth”, Debut Album “Introspect” Just on the Horizon

Sometimes as an artist, you just need to be prepared to flip the script in order to make the splash you aim for. On our latest visit to the indie world we are checking out “Sweet Tooth”, the latest from J DURAN. J DURAN, shaped by a childhood immersed in diverse musical influences from old-school country and Motown to the new wave scene, now showcases his indie rock talents with pop sensibilities on his debut album, “Introspect,” set for release in spring 2024 through Gold’n Retriever Entertainment. Despite being a young artist’s solo debut, the nine-track album surprises with its polished songwriting and diverse sound, drawing inspiration from the likes of Beach House, Wilco, and Vampire Weekend. DURAN‘s musical journey began early, writing his first songs at 13 near Nashville and later touring with punk and garage rock bands. The culmination of his experiences led to a collaboration with Brad Shultz, resulting in the production of “Introspect” alongside engineer Jeremy Ferguson, showcasing the depth of his musical evolution and introspective exploration.

“Shit kinda sucks, but there’s something better than this. I aimed to build and channel that sentiment into the guitar solo. I was listening to as well as exploring a variety of music around that time – Talking Heads, Herbie Hancock, Grateful Dead, as well as others. I think subconsciously the vocal melody in the bridge was inspired by Jerry and Bob’s melodic harmonies.” – J DURAN

Nashville indie/alt songwriter J DURAN introduces his latest single, “Sweet Tooth,” a compelling blend of spiteful optimism that reflects a sense of impending doom wrapped in a veneer of hope. Serving as his first release for 2024, the track will feature on his upcoming debut album, “Introspect,” produced by Cage the Elephant guitarist Brad Shultz. DURAN acknowledges life’s challenges with a sentiment of “Shit kinda sucks, but there’s something better than this,” using the guitar solo to convey his emotional journey. Through “Sweet Tooth,” DURAN invites listeners to explore the intricacies of the human experience, embracing a paradoxical narrative of adversity and hope within the indie/alt landscape.
