Montreal’s The Fake Friends Announce Debut LP With Sharp Post-Punk Single “A Sucker Born Every Minute”

Hailing from Montreal’s tight-knit punk and indie scene, The Fake Friends grew out of shared apartments, shared stages, and a love of music that runs through every corner of their city. Frontman Matthew Savage leads a six-piece lineup—guitarists Felix Crawford-Legault and Luca Santilli, bassist Michael Kamps, keyboardist Bradley Cooper-Graham, and drummer Michael Tomizzi—whose sound moves effortlessly between hardcore intensity and catchy, power-pop hooks. High-energy, melodic, and a little jagged, their music reflects both their roots and their relentless drive forward.

Onstage, The Fake Friends have built a reputation far beyond Montreal, touring the Midwest and East Coast and sharpening their sound show by show. With placements like Hockey Night in Canada and support slots for acts like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the Buzzcocks, and Wine Lips, they’ve proven themselves as one of the city’s most exciting live acts. Their new single, “A Sucker Born Every Minute,” out December 11 via Stomp Records, is the first taste of their 2026 album Let’s Not Overthink This—a bold, rhythmic, and unmistakably Montreal record full of post-punk edge and melodic hooks.

Montreal’s The Fake Friends kick off the lead-up to their debut LP Let’s Not Overthink This with the single “A Sucker Born Every Minute,” out December 11 via Stomp Records. The track blends dance-punk energy with a thick post-punk backbone, landing somewhere between Parquet Courts, Culture Abuse, and the rawer edges of early 2000s alt-rock. Tightly wound guitars and a restless rhythm section drive the song, while frontman Matthew Savage navigates the tension between bravado and self-reflection. Lyrically, it tackles burned bridges, late-night decisions, and the urge to run from responsibility, all anchored by a hook that lands like a self-directed challenge. It’s a track that moves fast but leaves a lasting emotional weight.

The single also offers a first glimpse of the band’s debut full-length with their current lineup. Recorded across Montreal’s studio network and shaped by producer and engineer Jordan Barillaro, Let’s Not Overthink This expands on the energy of earlier EPs with bigger arrangements, more interplay between guitars and keys, and a stronger sense of danceable rhythm woven through the controlled chaos. Still loud and messy in all the right ways, the album reflects a band stepping fully into their identity, sharper and more intentional while retaining the raw edge that has become their signature.
