Montreal’s Punk Outfit NOBRO Return With New Single “DOOMTOWN”
JUNO Award–winners NOBRO return with “DOOMTOWN,” a garage-rock blast that marks a new, more vulnerable era for the Montreal punk band. Known for their wild, liberating, middle-finger-up party punk, the group suddenly found themselves facing real-life upheaval: half the band quit, Carbonneau lost her father, and McCaughey began caring for hers as he struggles with dementia. What should’ve been a career high point instead forced them into some uncomfortable, existential questions—about the band, about their futures, and about what happens when the chaos of life catches up to you.
“DOOMTOWN” channels those feelings without losing NOBRO’s trademark fire. Produced and mixed by John Agnello, the track keeps their sharp songwriting and manic energy but turns its lens inward, sitting with grief and dread instead of sprinting away from it. McCaughey’s dark sense of humor—like wondering if she’ll still be singing about “pussy and drugs” in a nursing home—gives the song a bittersweet honesty. The accompanying animated video by Mi’gmaw filmmaker Christopher Grant deepens the mood, following a lone wanderer through empty streets in search of connection.
The single arrives ahead of NOBRO’s U.S. tour with The Front Bottoms and marks their first release since their acclaimed 2023 album Set Your Pussy Free, which earned them a POLARIS shortlist and the 2025 JUNO for Rock Album of the Year. After years of relentless touring and high-energy shows, McCaughey and Carbonneau see NOBRO as the space where they take risks, hold each other up, and try to make something meaningful in a tough world. “We just want this fucking thing to work,” McCaughey says—and “DOOMTOWN” feels like the sound of a band fighting to keep moving forward together.
