Matías Roden Explores Fear of Commitment on Bittersweet Synth-Pop Single “On the Run” feat. Queer Cowboy Music Video, Offers Political Commentary on Canada and the USA’s Relationship Today

Matías Roden is a Peruvian-Canadian singer-songwriter based in Vancouver whose musical journey seamlessly blends his diverse cultural background with influences from classic British synth-pop and modern production techniques. After gaining recognition in the city’s indie pop scene, Matías caught the attention of acclaimed producer Louise Burns, leading to a record deal with Light Organ Records/604 Records. His music explores deeply personal themes such as mental health struggles, multicultural upbringing, and LGBTQ+ identity, showcased through raw and honest lyrics. With a debut single, “Snow Angel,” released in November 2023 and an eagerly anticipated EP on the horizon, Matías Roden’s rise promises to be a captivating journey of self-expression and musical exploration.

Vancouver-based pop artist Matías Roden returns with “On the Run,” a bittersweet synth-pop anthem about the push-and-pull of early queer romance. Described by Roden as a “pre-heartbreak song,” it captures the heady rush of new love alongside the creeping urge to flee before things get too real. Blending country-inspired storytelling with dark synth textures and a hook-driven pop-rock edge, the track channels influences from sunset road trips to Depeche Mode. Co-produced with Canadian artist Louise Burns, it features drums meticulously crafted by Roden himself, built from stitched-together samples to form the track’s pulsing heartbeat. Its shifting dynamics — sparse, intimate verses swelling into sweeping choruses before falling into near silence — echo the unpredictable rhythm of desire, fear, and longing.

The song’s official video mirrors these themes through a clever, country-tinged concept that doubles as political commentary. Starring Connor Riopel (Amazon Prime’s Laid), it follows two cowboys escaping America for Canada, culminating in a kiss beneath a massive Canadian flag. Both the video and single artwork nod to Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA imagery, reframed with a proudly Canadian twist. By merging queer visibility, commentary on LGBTQ+ rights, and questions of national identity, Roden creates a layered work that’s as emotionally resonant as it is visually striking.
