Logan Lynn Announces The Pain and The Power Documentary | Presented by Portugal. The Man’s KNIK Records’ PortuGAY Division
Portland artist and activist Logan Lynn has announced The Pain and The Power, a new documentary directed by Cai Indermaur that explores his 30-year career through the lenses of queerness, faith, addiction, trauma, and personal reinvention. Paired with an original soundtrack album arriving on September 4, the film uses music as a central part of the storytelling rather than simply as background, offering an intimate portrait of Lynn’s journey both on and off the stage.
Alongside the announcement, Lynn shared the singles “The Cocaine Scene” and “Too Hard,” two upbeat electro tracks that introduce the project’s emotional core. Released through PortuGAY, KNIK Records’ new LGBTQ+ imprint founded by Portugal. The Man, the songs examine the exhaustion of addiction and the challenge of letting go of behaviors that can become deeply tied to a person’s identity.
“The process of making this record and film has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. It’s wild to watch decades of footage and songs become a story I can finally step back and see from the outside. These first two singles feel like opening the door and inviting people into that world for the first time. Getting to collaborate with Kyle Andrews on ‘Too Hard’ and with Brian Fortson (Classtronaut) on ‘The Cocaine Scene’ was dreamy as hell. I’ve got so much respect for the artists and filmmakers involved in this massive project — by far, the biggest in my 30 years of doing this — and I am really excited for people to see and hear what we have been building together.”
The Pain and The Power is a deeply personal documentary that chronicles Logan Lynn’s life and career, from his upbringing in the fundamentalist Christian communities of rural Nebraska and Texas to his evolution into a celebrated artist and activist. Drawing from decades of archival footage, home videos, and candid interviews, the film explores the lasting effects of religious trauma, abuse, addiction, and public struggles while documenting Lynn’s ongoing journey toward self-acceptance. Rather than framing his story as a traditional comeback narrative, the documentary focuses on what it means to leave behind old identities and rebuild a life on your own terms.
That same sense of reflection carries into the film’s companion soundtrack, which serves as both a farewell and a fresh start. Featuring collaborations with Kyle Andrews, Brian Fortson, and Dale Hiscock, the album wrestles with loss, forgiveness, and the difficult process of letting go of people, beliefs, and dreams that once felt essential. Closing with a poignant cover of “Rainbow Connection,” the record ultimately finds hope in the aftermath, proving that creativity and connection can endure even when everything else seems to fall away.
