LAMMPING Announces ‘Never Never’ – First of a Four-Album Sonic Voyage
The deeper we dive into this psych-rock pool, the more we are starting to realize that Canadian rock bands might just be leading this current wave. On our latest visit to our Northern neighbors, we are checking out ‘Never Never’ the last single from Lammping. Only taking true shape in the last few years, Lammping was founded by singer/songwriter Mikhail Galkin and drummer Jay Anderson in a chance meeting. After bonding over their mutual music influences on a night where both of their previous bands shared the playbill, Galkin and Anderson recruited guitarist Matt Aldred and bassist Scott Hannigan. No stranger to Toronto’s underground scene themselves, Lammping set one clear goal in mind…to combine and unite their drastically different sounds under the psych-rock banner. Since forming the band has released two albums, 1 EP (with another one on the horizon), and are making their way to the top of the Toronto psych-rock scene.
Toronto’s genre-defying project Lammping is launching an ambitious four-part album series starting with Never Never, via We Are Busy Bodies. Originally a heavy psych band, Lammping’s sound has dramatically evolved after producer Mikhail Galkin revisited his hip-hop roots, blending boom-bap, fuzzed-out folk, psychedelic rock, and beat tape interludes into a unique, boundary-breaking mix. The first album, a collaboration with wild rockabilly vocalist Bloodshot Bill, fuses psych-rock textures with ‘90s-style boom-bap, creating a cinematic and genre-blurring experience that showcases Lammping’s knack for transforming voices into mesmerizing, otherworldly sounds.
The subsequent albums continue this adventurous spirit: the second features lush harmonies and heavy psychedelic yacht rock influences with longtime Toronto collaborators Drew Smith and Chris Cummings; the third returns to Lammping’s full-band dynamic, mixing folk, psych riffs, and soulful boom-bap inspired by classic sample-heavy hip-hop; and the fourth is a pure hip-hop collaboration with Toronto underground legend Theo 3, combining psychedelic production with flipped samples from obscure Soviet records. Together, this series highlights Lammping’s fearless genre experimentation and celebrates Toronto’s rich, evolving music scene.
