Jont’s “Dark Days Are Over” is a Life-Affirming, Soul-Stirring Call to Rise Again – A Singer-Songwriter Anthem of Resilience, Rebirth, and Radical Simplicity

Jont, born Jonathan Whittington in London, has led a creatively fearless life shaped by poetry, music, and personal discovery. Beginning as a teenage poet who dined with Allen Ginsberg in New York, Jont’s artistic mission was rooted early in the belief that art should “relieve human suffering.” After a brief stint as a professional cricketer, he turned to songwriting, releasing Life is Fine in 1998 and eventually moving to Los Angeles under the wing of Tom Petty’s manager. His innovative spirit led to the Unlit tours—intimate, house-concert-style events that predated and helped inspire the rise of Sofar Sounds—bringing his music to living rooms across the UK and the US. Over time, his songs found a global audience through television shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Wedding Crashers, while his releases received critical acclaim in Q and Uncut.

In a pivotal life shift, a trip to Sicily inspired Jont to embrace life as a traveling troubadour, eventually leading him to Nova Scotia in 2012 upon learning he had an eight-year-old daughter living there. Over the past decade, he’s cultivated a life of reflection, fatherhood, and spiritual growth, producing a string of deeply personal and exploratory albums. His Canadian discography spans from Hello Halifax to the vibrant Thank You for the Medicine and 2024’s Old Traveller, a collection of original medicine songs. Now, in 2025, Jont returns with new music developed over four years, both solo and with his band The Fish—works that blend innovation, emotional honesty, and timeless melodies, showcasing an artist at the peak of his creative powers.

“I didn’t know that the photographer would be so skilled and that she would capture so magically the vibe of the song through her lens. But when I got the rushes back to Dario Lozano Thornton and Annaka Gale, who have directed all of my videos in the last year, they loved them too and edited a classic simple, lo-fi rock video that perfectly suits the optimism and freedom of the song.”

Nova Scotia-by-way-of-London singer-songwriter Jont returns with his stirring new single, “Dark Days Are Over”—a cathartic, soul-baring anthem that captures the thunderclap moment when despair gives way to joy, and when starting again feels not only possible, but essential. Layered with emotional grit and quiet triumph, the song is both a personal reckoning and a universal invitation: to let go, to feel everything, and to remember that the light often creeps in after the deepest dark. Musically and lyrically, it’s classic Jont—intimate yet expansive, rooted in poetic introspection yet radiating a contagious kind of hope.

As with much of his work, “Dark Days Are Over” was born not just from inspiration but from the raw clay of lived experience. Jont reflects on how pain, often ancestral, can haunt the spirit like a shadow that refuses to lift—until, suddenly, it does. “Things linger… in the soul,” he says, acknowledging the heavy inheritance of trauma that we often carry unknowingly. But there’s a turning point: “Until one day it comes to you,” he explains, likening that moment of clarity to stumbling across a transcendent riff hidden in plain sight. In a world increasingly mired in fear and self-doubt, Jont’s song dares to suggest that joy—pure, simple, defiant joy—can still break through. “Dark Days Are Over” isn’t just a song. It’s a quiet revolution.
