Genre-Bending Project Grand Tapestry Fuses Indian Instrumentals + Hip Hop In New “Tides: Remixed”

While we recognize every artist/producer in their attempts to tweak the formulas of their chosen genres, there aren’t many projects that wow us like today’s pick. On our latest visit over to Gravitas we were able to check out Tides: Remixed, a brand new remix album from Grand Tapestry. If you aren’t familiar with this project, Grand Tapestry consists of a talented trio of musicians: Eligh, Alam Khan, and Salar Nader, who all share one vision. Lovers of hip-hop and rap at their core, Grand Tapestry uses their shared musical interests and raw talent to combine hip-hop, rap, and traditional Indian instrumentals into a melting pot of styles. A highly dynamic blend of cultures, Grand Tapestry took our rather chaotic ore and polished it into their own mesmerizing blend, bridging the gap between two very distinct musical styles. Their works have already been featured in The New York Times and NPR, as well as performing at major festivals and venues such as Northern Lights, Global Fest, and The Greek Theatre in Berkley, CA!

Once Grand Tapestry introduced their genre-bending Tides to the masses, they knew that it had to be open for a remix package. Consisting of 5 remixes from Savej, Morillo, Lil Fish, Balkan Bump, and ETHNO & Drishti Beats, Tides: Remixed is an entirely different beast all in itself. While still keeping the Indian instrumentals at its core intact and center stage, each producer shifts around the production to fit their own vision. We truly traverse on a journey with this remix package, starting off with Savej taking a more tropical approach on his rendition of “Seagulls”. Tides: Remixed actually ends on another remix of “Seagulls”, giving ETHNO & Drishti Beats the reins to dive more into the classical realm and add a beautiful violin performance alongside the traditional Indian santoor. Our personal favorite is Lil Fish’s remix of “Radiant”, where the track’s hip-hop influences shine through the most, but with the beautiful instrumentals taking only a minor step to the side. Grand Tapestry and Tides: Remixed are definitely worth diving deep into, as this project is one we can truly say is ground-breaking.
