Coloured Paper Shapes Invites You Into “Playtime” — A Soundtrack for Extrospective Introverts

Coloured Paper Shapes is the South London-based project of artist-producer Richard James Jakubowski, who crafts a unique blend of jangly indie pop and alternative rock infused with emotional honesty and experimental touches. Drawing inspiration from icons like David Bowie, Metronomy, and Japanese Breakfast, his music captures the introspective tension of what he calls “music for extrospective introverts,” exploring themes of identity, routine, and connection beneath the surface of social life.

His latest album, Flamingos, is a concept-driven narrative set in a dive bar, inspired by real-life experiences, following a group of thirty-something co-workers trapped in cycles of post-work drinks and existential inertia. The album unfolds like a cinematic soundtrack, delving into the characters’ blurred weekends and quiet awakenings as one begins to see their repetitive lifestyle for what it is, making Flamingos a poignant reflection on human connection and the search for meaning amid routine.

His upcoming single “Playtime” was originally inspired by a memorable scene from Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, where children find joy and freedom despite difficult circumstances. Richard James Jakubowski wanted to capture that feeling of letting go—the way certain people or places allow us, whether as kids or adults, to reconnect with a carefree, playful spirit. With sunny guitar chords and a Motown-inspired energy, “Playtime” evokes the early night’s sense of possibility and escapism.

Although it began separately from the Flamingos album, Jakubowski realized “Playtime” perfectly complements the record’s themes of release and wild abandon. His songwriting process centers on building from vivid images or emotional moments, creating music that feels cinematic yet grounded. The track captures a shared moment of letting go and embracing freedom, resonating with anyone who has sought to escape routine and find joy amid life’s challenges.
