Celtic Punk Trailblazers The Real McKenzies Raise a Ruckus With “I Wanna Eat Sardines (With Yer Mother)”

Vancouver’s Celtic punk legends The Real McKenzies are back with “I Wanna Eat Sardines (With Yer Mother),” the first single from their upcoming album On Yer Bike (out May 29 via Stomp Records). It’s the band’s first release since leaving Fat Wreck Chords, and it’s pure, unfiltered McKenzie magic. For more than 30 years, frontman Paul McKenzie and his crew have been crisscrossing the globe with bagpipes, guitars, and a touring van that’s seen better days, bringing their wild blend of Scottish folk and punk rock to bars, clubs, and festivals everywhere. If you love The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, or Flogging Molly, this one’s for you.

Over their long and famously chaotic career, The Real McKenzies have shared stages with everyone from NOFX and Rancid to Flogging Molly, Metallica, and the late Shane MacGowan, carving out a legacy as true pioneers of Celtic punk in North America. Long before the genre’s wider wave, the band built their reputation the old-fashioned way—relentless touring, roaring crowds, and songs made to be shouted at the top of your lungs. Their music has appeared in films, video games, and countless sweaty clubs, but the heart of the band has always been their wild, bagpipe-fueled live energy.

More than thirty years in, The Real McKenzies remain exactly what they’ve always been: hard-partying, hard-touring, and unapologetically loud. Their new single, “I Wanna Eat Sardines (With Yer Mother),” shows the band still at the top of their game, balancing cheeky irreverence with Celtic swagger and punk ferocity. Leading the way for their upcoming album On Yer Bike, the track lands somewhere between a Highland march and a barroom brawl, proving that even decades on, The Real McKenzies know how to make Celtic punk a full-on, sing-along celebration.

The track itself is classic Real McKenzies: rowdy, cheeky, and impossible not to sing along to. Blistering guitars, pounding drums, and bagpipes that wail and skirl drive a chorus that practically begs to be shouted across a packed pub. It’s just a taste of what’s coming on On Yer Bike, a thirteen-song ride through love, history, storytelling, and absolute lunacy—including the darkly hilarious Sawney Bean trilogy about Scotland’s most notorious cannibal clan. With the band sounding tighter than ever and McKenzie brimming with energy, this single proves the Real McKenzies still know exactly how to make Celtic punk feel like a full-on celebration.
