Bay Area Guitar Pop Purist Rob Good Reveals “Minor Key,” Second Advance Single From Goodbye Summertime
The Goods return with “Minor Key,” the second advance single from their forthcoming album, Goodbye Summertime, due September 16 via Dandy Boy Records. Following the shimmering optimism of “Summer’s Almost Gone,” the new track reveals a more vulnerable side of songwriter Rob Good, pairing the band’s melodic power-pop instincts with a bittersweet reflection on heartbreak, memory, and moving forward. Good describes the song simply as “a bittersweet goodbye to someone left behind,” capturing the lingering emotions that remain after a relationship has ended.
That sense of transition runs throughout Goodbye Summertime, a fourteen-track album written during an especially turbulent period in Good’s life. After the collapse of a long-term relationship, he unexpectedly found new love while still processing the grief and disappointment of what had come before. Living almost entirely out of his recording studio at the time, Good began writing and recording songs as those experiences unfolded, resulting in what he describes as real-time accounts of the emotional highs and lows he was navigating.
“My whole life turned upside down one summer. The long-term relationship I was in collapsed, and in the wake of that, I found new love. I was sorting through the grief and failure of my previous relationship and the bliss and anxiety of my new one all at once, all while basically living at my recording studio, and I found myself in an intensely creative state.”
Musically, the album finds The Goods stretching well beyond the jangling power-pop foundations of their earlier material. Tracks like the psychedelic, Revolver-inspired “Lazy,” Mellotron-soaked “Punchbowl,” vulnerable “Wing,” and Wurlitzer-driven album closer “Sleepytime” introduce a broader range of textures while preserving the hooks and melodic songwriting at the center of the band’s sound. “Minor Key” sits at the emotional heart of that evolution, capturing the quiet moment when there is nothing left to do but look back, accept what happened, and say goodbye.
Produced by Good at his Oakland studio with contributions from Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen, and Ian McBrayer, then mixed and mastered by Bart Thurber, Goodbye Summertime turns one life-changing summer into an intimate portrait of endings and new beginnings. Across the record, The Goods explore the complicated space where grief, nostalgia, excitement, and new love can all exist at once.
