wordsofAzia is a French-born artist of Ivorian heritage whose music bridges continents and generations, blending the traditional Bhété rhythms of her mother’s village in Ivory Coast with jazz, soul, and spiritual reflection. Her debut EP, MODERN WIHEGOU, is a deeply personal exploration of heritage, identity, and feminine divinity, shaped by a desire to reconnect with her roots. Beginning the project in her mother’s village, Azia found inspiration in the absence of maternal presence, which sparked a reflection on how to weave more cultural elements into her music.
The result is a rich fusion where ancestral knowledge meets modern artistry—AfroJazz intertwined with indigenous Bhété chants, oral storytelling layered with soulful harmonies, and archival recordings of her mother and grandmother woven into contemporary textures. By living between Paris, London, and Abidjan, Azia crafts a sound that is both deeply rooted and globally resonant, turning MODERN WIHEGOU into a living dialogue between past and present.
MODERN WIHEGOU was created entirely on wordsofAzia’s portable studio, allowing her music to evolve alongside her spiritual and geographical journey. Singing in both English and Bhété, she draws on a rich oral tradition where songs serve as vessels of memory and healing. Tracks like “Lagô” (meaning “God” in Bhété), written in Dakar during a period of deep reflection, highlight how faith, inner alignment, and ancestral reverence guide her creative process.
Since 2024, Azia has released five visually striking singles that together have garnered over a million streams worldwide. Her sound blends AfroJazz, folk, world, and alternative jazz, infused with poetry, spirituality, and deep respect for matriarchal lineage. At its core, MODERN WIHEGOU is about building bridges—between generations, the sacred and contemporary, and personal identity and artistic expression—inviting listeners to be aligned, aware of their history, and open to learning from the love and stories around them.
