Shaina Hayes Shares Folk-Pop Single + Video “Sun and Time” Premiered via Under the Radar
The older we get, the more we fall in love with the apparent simplicity of folk music on the surface and all of the complex layers hidden underneath. On our latest peek into the indie world we are checking out “Sun and Time”, the latest from Shaina Hayes. Raised in the quaint town of Shigawake on the Gaspé coast of Quebec, Shaina has cultivated a diverse musical palette influenced by singer-songwriters like Feist, Joni Mitchell, and Regina Spektor, along with a deep appreciation for traditional and modern country artists. After studying agricultural sciences at McGill University, she returned to her rural roots to record and co-produce her debut album, “to coax a waltz,” released in April 2022. Despite maintaining ties to her farming background, Shaina shifted her focus to become a full-time musician, captivating audiences across Quebec and sharing stages with renowned acts such as The War on Drugs and The Barr Brothers. The recent release of her album “Kindergarten Heart” solidifies Shaina Hayes as a charismatic and dedicated musician, promising a vibrant future in the global music scene.
Shaina’s musical journey is a testament to her versatile influences and commitment to her craft. Growing up surrounded by the rhythms of the farm and inspired by a wide range of musical genres, she seamlessly transitioned from agricultural studies to creating heartfelt and authentic music. The release of “Kindergarten Heart” marks a pivotal moment in Shaina’s career, ensuring her place as a full-time musician with a unique blend of small-town charm and global aspirations.
“‘Sun and Time’ was written for a dear friend who I used to run a vegetable farm with. It describes the intense lows that we would both feel in the winter when we’d begin to get stir-crazy waiting for the next growing season to begin. The song is a plea for her to remember the beautiful things that we were able to accomplish together, the strength of her character, and the fact that, at the very least, there’s always another summer somewhere around the corner!” – Shaina Hayes
Simply put, “Sun and Time” is a heartfelt tribute to those facing the winter blues. Premiered via Under the Radar, the track is a glimpse into her upcoming album, “Kindergarten Heart,” scheduled for release on February 23 through Bonsound. “Sun and Time” captures the essence of summer’s warmth, encouraging listeners to endure the winter by anticipating brighter days. The song, characterized by a drum-forward rhythm and moody electric guitar strumming, subtly ventures into indie-pop territory while retaining Hayes’ signature tender folk charm. Accompanied by a visually striking video created from footage during her 2023 summer tour of Québec, the release serves as a nostalgic celebration of sunshine and summertime, adding depth to the emotional resonance of the track.
