Queer Artist Logan Lynn Releases New Singles “Run Away From The Sun” and “Rainbow Connection” From Award-Winning Doc

Portland artist and activist Logan Lynn has released two new singles, “Run Away From The Sun” and “Rainbow Connection,” from the award-winning documentary and accompanying original motion picture soundtrack, The Pain and The Power. Lynn has also shared exclusive scenes from the film featuring each track, further connecting the music to the documentary’s exploration of identity, resilience, loss, and survival. Together, the releases showcase the deeply personal nature of the project while reflecting Lynn’s longstanding commitment to using art as a vehicle for activism and connection.

The soundtrack closes with Lynn’s cover of Paul Williams’ “Rainbow Connection,” reimagined as an intimate expression of hope and solidarity, particularly for LGBTQ+ communities facing renewed hostility and erasure. That message carries additional weight following the destruction of Burn Money Music Studio by fire shortly after the first half of the album was completed. Created across that dramatic dividing line, The Pain and The Power ultimately becomes a document of perseverance—acknowledging grief and destruction while demonstrating how creativity, community, and hope can endure in their aftermath.

“‘Rainbow Connection’ has meant different things to me at different points in my life, but I hear it differently now. I grew up believing in one very specific version of salvation, and so much of ‘The Pain and The Power’ is about grieving that version of the world. There’s something incredibly queer about continuing to imagine a world for yourself when the world around you keeps insisting that you shouldn’t exist in it. This song feels like another kind of faith to me now — quiet, strange, and inclusive. I wanted the album to end there, not with everything resolved, but with this tiny, stubborn refusal to give up on wonder, on each other, or on the possibility that something better is still out there. It felt like leaving a light on. The man who wrote the song, Paul Williams, is a dear friend; we have gotten to know each other and work together through Portugal. The Man, who he writes with. Getting to know Paul has been such a joy. When I sent him the song several months back, he responded with ‘What a sweet sound bath and great surprise. Love it Logan. Just love it.’ — I can’t think of a time when I felt more proud of a song.”

“‘Run Away From The Sun’ is about realizing that the thing I had been reaching toward is also the thing that’s been hurting me. I used to think strength meant staying — staying loyal, staying hopeful, staying inside things long after they had turned. I spent a lot of my life mistaking endurance for strength. This song is about me realizing I am allowed to leave. I don’t have to keep standing in the fire just because I once believed the light was going to save me.”

Directed by Cai Indermaur and presented by PortuGAY, the new LGBTQ+ imprint from KNIK Records founded by Grammy Award-winning band Portugal. The Man, The Pain and The Power chronicles Logan Lynn’s 30-year career at the intersection of music, queerness, faith, addiction, trauma, activism, and self-reinvention. Structured around songs from Lynn’s forthcoming album of the same name, the documentary treats music as an integral part of its storytelling while revisiting defining moments from his life and career, including connections with The Dandy Warhols, The Get Up Kids, Tiffany, and his complicated history with Harvey Weinstein. The accompanying album arrives September 4.

As the film continues its festival run, Lynn will host a series of special advance screenings throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho this September, appearing in person for post-film Q&As. Select events will feature guest moderators including author Sheila Hamilton and Seattle DJ Marco Collins, extending the documentary’s themes of resilience, identity, and creative survival into conversations with audiences.
