Psy-Rock Band TEKE::TEKE Drops New Chaotic Single “Barabara”, Full Album “Shirushi” Out In May!
It is not often that we find a band that intrigues and perplexes us so much at the same time. Diving back into the psy-rock world we are checking out “Barbara”, the newest single from rock band TEKE::TEKE. Originally formed as a tribute band for the legendary Takeshi Terauchi, TEKE::TEKE discovered their chemistry and quickly chucked their original cover sets out the window and adapted to a new sound. Based out of Montreal, TEKE::TEKE combines elements of traditional Japanese ballads with Brazillian psychedelic rock and punk music to make an original sound that only TEKE::TEKE could craft. Consistently fighting against genre norms and expanding their boundaries as musicians, TEKE::TEKE has created a magically terrifying musical universe that deserves the grow and envelop the world. Let the chaos ensue. “Meikyu” is the latest single off their upcoming debut album Shirushi, which will be dropping in full on May 7th. TEKE::TEKE even performed in a slot during this year’s SXSW Online festival!
“The initial inspiration for this song is a true story that happened to me, I was randomly mistaken for an old lady by this stranger on the street who came up to me screaming Barbara? Barbara?! It’s you?! Barbara?! Maya [TEKE::TEKE’s vocalist] then had the idea of taking the story to another level by turning it into this psychedelic tale of ‘Yokai’ (‘ghost’ or ‘spirit’) that escapes a house and goes on doing all sorts of pranks on people, that spirit being Barbara.” – Hidetaka Yoneyama (Rhythm)
The more we willingly dive down this rabbit hole that TEKE::TEKE left for us, the more we just accept the chaotic nature of their music. The band’s latest offering, “Barbara”, details one of many Japanese folktales regarding spirits, this time about a trickster spirit who pulls pranks but gives good fortune to you if you see her. This single is chaotic right out of the gate, yet we feel it fits perfectly when the track is telling a story of a mischievous yokai. However, TEKE::TEKE captures this madness in tandem, each instrument, and element acting as if they are all members of an odd parade. The lyric video for “Barbara”, animated by the group’s guitarist Serge Nakauchi-Pelletier and vocalist Maya Kuroki, captures that same feeling of surreal chaos but tells a more detailed account of the spirit’s shenanigans. The lyric video is a must watch, even if for TEKE::TEKE’s visual flair alone. We hope you haven’t had enough of TEKE::TEKE yet, as their album Shirushi drops in full on May 7th!
