DIRECTOR: Dan Gilroy

GENRE: Crime, Thriller

YEAR: 2014

Nightcrawler is a thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling – where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

Nightcrawler is one of those films this year that came out of nowhere and quickly fell off of my radar until its last week on the theatre circuit. A film about filming crime scenes and car crashes? Way to speak to the madness inside of me. Jake Gyllenhaal is perfect for the main role, as he plays the role of a psychopath rather well. Not a serial murdering psychopath mind you, just the normal twisted kind. Nightcrawler follows the development of Gylenhaal’s character so well that I will definitely have to take note of it.

Unfortunately Nightcrawler‘s story isn’t all chopped up to be. The story severely lacks in many areas but it was still decent enough for me not to walk out of the room. Luckily Nightcrawler is a very character driven story and Gyllenhaal, along with the supporting cast, put on one hell of a performance. Also, the film is shot in very low lighting. I know that it is supposed to contribute to the overall tone, but it made some scenes too dark to watch.

 PROS:

  •  Main/Supporting cast performances.
  • Character driven story.
  • Dark themes.
  • Are you a sociopath?

CONS:

  •  Story wasn’t too exciting.
  • Some scenes were too dark to see.

SCORE: 7.2 / 10
