Montreal’s The Fake Friends Step Into Sleek New Wave On Advance Single “The Way She Goes”

Hailing from Montreal’s tight-knit punk and indie scene, The Fake Friends grew out of shared apartments, shared stages, and a love of music that runs through every corner of their city. Frontman Matthew Savage leads a six-piece lineup—guitarists Felix Crawford-Legault and Luca Santilli, bassist Michael Kamps, keyboardist Bradley Cooper-Graham, and drummer Michael Tomizzi—whose sound moves effortlessly between hardcore intensity and catchy, power-pop hooks. High-energy, melodic, and a little jagged, their music reflects both their roots and their relentless drive forward.

Onstage, The Fake Friends have built a reputation far beyond Montreal, touring the Midwest and East Coast and sharpening their sound show by show. With placements like Hockey Night in Canada and support slots for acts like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the Buzzcocks, and Wine Lips, they’ve proven themselves as one of the city’s most exciting live acts. Their new single, “A Sucker Born Every Minute,” out December 11 via Stomp Records, is the first taste of their 2026 album Let’s Not Overthink This—a bold, rhythmic, and unmistakably Montreal record full of post-punk edge and melodic hooks.

Montreal’s The Fake Friends return with “The Way She Goes,” a lean, icy follow-up to December’s “A Sucker Born Every Minute” and a key moment on their upcoming debut LP Let’s Not Overthink This, out January 16 via Stomp Records. Trading big guitars and anthemic swing for taut rhythms and post-punk tension, the track nods to new wave touchstones like Pylon, Ultravox, and Wire while keeping the band’s melodic core intact. It’s a sharper, more controlled cut—precise and restless—built for late-night movement and subtle unease.

Placed at the album’s emotional midpoint, “The Way She Goes” captures confidence beginning to fray, with Savage’s weary, self-aware vocals circling themes of missteps, bad habits, and internal conflict. The tightly interlocked guitars, pulsing keys, and nervous rhythm section mirror that tension, pushing the song forward without ever fully releasing it. Steeped in a distinctly Montreal atmosphere of neon-lit nights and quiet anxiety, the track feels less like resignation and more like recognition—an understanding of the patterns you fall into, even when you know better.
