Montreal’s Stomp Records Marks 30 Years of Worldwide Punk Influence with Celebration Dates Across Canada
Thirty years ago, Stomp Records started in Montreal as a scrappy passion project between musicians who just wanted to give Canadian punk and ska bands a real shot. What should’ve been a short-lived experiment — built on no money, no roadmap, and a whole lot of caffeine — ended up connecting isolated scenes across the country and helping spark a national movement. Long before the internet stitched music communities together, Stomp was doing the work by hand: linking cities, building touring routes, and turning local heroes into cross-country road warriors. From the beginning, the mission wasn’t just about putting out records — it was about building a culture where bands could grow, survive, and find each other.
As the music industry shifted through the late 90s, 2000s, and the Napster crash, Stomp kept adapting. Instead of folding, they went all-in on digital early, expanded into booking and management, and opened their doors to every corner of the underground — punk, ska, hardcore, folk-punk, rockabilly, brass bands, bagpipes, whatever had heart. That openness helped launch or support some of Canada’s most important underground acts, from The Real McKenzies and The Dreadnoughts to The Creepshow, Wine Lips, The Flatliners, PKEW PKEW PKEW, The Anti-Queens, and many more. And it wasn’t always smooth: floods, robberies, broken bones, industry collapses, even literal Nazi attacks — somehow Stomp pushed through all of it, collecting Junos, gold records, and generations of loyal fans along the way.
Now three decades later, Stomp’s mission is still the same: artists first, community always, and no watering anything down. With nearly 300 releases and global distribution, the label has helped shape the careers of artists who’ve gone on to join Simple Plan, Walk Off The Earth, Kings of Leon, Broken Social Scene, and beyond. To celebrate 30 years of chaos, camaraderie, and very loud nights, they’re hitting the road for a nationwide run of anniversary shows — a thank-you to every fan, every band, and every sweaty, unforgettable moment that kept this unlikely label alive.
