Experimental Bassist Mirror Maze Teases Upcoming Debut “Reflect” EP With Lead Single “Piece of Mind”
When you finally decide to make your official debut and choose the experimental bass world as your niche, you better be prepared to let your weirdness fly. On our latest peek into the bass pool we are checking out “Piece of Mind”, the latest drop from Mirror Maze. Originally making his professional debut during Electric Hawk’s Harmony Virtual Festival, Mirror Maze has quickly caught the attention of audiences and professionals in the bass music world. With the lack of confines and rules in the experimental bass genre, everyone is quick to wonder what Mirror Maze has up their sleeve. Striking the balance between complex bass machinations and dance beats, Mirror Maze is finally ready to unveil his largest project yet…set the stage for Reflect.
“Right around before the pandemic started, I had been writing tunes at home living with some of my best friends. During that time, I had spent the last 6 months trying to figure out a new name for my music project as well. Once I made a decision I started making new tunes for the project, one being “Piece of Mind” which was originally a beat I had made inspired by the sound of one my favorite bands, Hiatus Kaiyote. I wanted to have a vocalist sing on the beat, so I asked one of my friends, Sarah Woolley (who has been a fan of Hiatus longer than myself) if she would be down to sing on it. She sent over like 2 files basically one takes, and they wrapped up the tune perfectly. Over time, I ended up taking those vocals and writing an entirely new beat around it, trying to make a more electronic club version I guess. With other tunes I had been writing at the time, that version felt like a better fit, so it is now track 2 on the EP!! (I made the original version a bonus track if you purchase the full record).
After a handful of singles introducing bass music fans to the experimental sound that is Mirror Maze, the masses are properly ready for the big debut. “Piece Of Mind” is our first taste of Mirror Maze’s official debut EP, Reflect, which showcases exactly the right amount of chaos that Mirror Maze is willing to offer up right now. Created in collaboration with singer Sarah Woolley, “Piece Of Mind” feels like a complex amalgamation of bass and machines that happen to ensnare a vocal performance within its web. Teetering on the line between experimental bass and groovy R&B (a line we didn’t know existed), “Piece of Mind” showcases Mirror Maze’s range and willingness to experiment/tweak the formula as a producer. If this single is what was chosen to prime the masses, we can’t wait to hear the rest of Reflect when it drops in full on December 16th.
