Canadian Rockers Lammping Reimagines Bloodshot Bill Original On “Won’t Back Down”
The deeper we dive into this psych-rock pool, the more we are starting to realize that Canadian rock bands might just be leading this current wave. On our latest visit to our Northern neighbors, we are checking out “Won’t Back Down” the last single from Lammping. Only taking true shape in the last few years, Lammping was founded by singer/songwriter Mikhail Galkin and drummer Jay Anderson in a chance meeting. After bonding over their mutual music influences on a night where both of their previous bands shared the playbill, Galkin and Anderson recruited guitarist Matt Aldred and bassist Scott Hannigan. No stranger to Toronto’s underground scene themselves, Lammping set one clear goal in mind…to combine and unite their drastically different sounds under the psych-rock banner. Since forming the band has released two albums, 1 EP (with another one on the horizon), and are making their way to the top of the Toronto psych-rock scene.
Toronto psych experimentalists Lammping return with “Won’t Back Down,” the second single from their upcoming collaborative LP Never Never, arriving June 27 via We Are Busy Bodies. The track features vocals from Montreal’s Bloodshot Bill and reimagines a song from his Psyche-O-Billy album, reshaping it into a haunting, slow-burning psychedelic drone. Built on gritty drum loops inspired by ’90s East Coast hip-hop and layered with eerie synths and warped guitars, the result is a genre-blurring piece that feels like it belongs in a vintage horror film or late-night sci-fi episode.
While lead single “Never Never” introduced the project with off-kilter, sax-driven funk, “Won’t Back Down” offers a heavier, more cinematic contrast. It’s a hypnotic step further into the sonic collage that defines Never Never—the first of four planned albums from Lammping that aim to fuse psychedelic rock, sample-based production, and a fiercely DIY spirit.
