While we normally have a general liking for the originality in Billie Eilish’s performances and have steered away from remixes, this one might just have to fix that. On our latest visit over to Dim Mak we are checking out “Bad Guy”, a phonk remix from T-Mass and Staarz. T-Mass, an emerging talent hailing from the vibrant Bay area, has established himself as a prominent figure in the realm of dance music production and DJing. What began as a series of freely available online releases swiftly gained traction, as listeners from around the world gravitated towards T-Mass’s innovative approach to music. Among his notable accomplishments, T-Mass’s 2016 remix of ILLENIUM’s hit track “It’s All on U” stands as a testament to his rising popularity. With an astonishing 70 million streams on Spotify alone, the remix has resonated deeply with audiences, showcasing T-Mass’s ability to infuse his own unique style into established works, breathing new life into familiar sounds. In the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music, T-Mass’s melodic dubstep sound and commitment to an authentic connection have established him as an artist to watch. I’m blessed to have met the vocalist, Staarz. We connected after I unknowingly remixed one of her songs and I happened to read my messages that day. Rare. She is the other half my music career always needed. Together, this song is the first of many we will bring you to make you all move. This Bad Guy cover is house, trap, and a sprinkle of phonk. Of all the songs that have been made, this is definitely one of them.” – T-Mass

So, ‘Bad Guy‘ by Billie Eilish has always been one of my top favorite songs by her. Honestly, I never imagined myself singing the song because, I mean, c’mon, it’s Billie Eilish. Like I always thought to myself, even if I tried, I could never resonate the same ‘bad guy‘ energy. Well, that thought took 180 now, haha. I have always also been a huge fan of T-Mass, and always adored his songs, but one that stood out to me the most is his bootleg remix of ‘Bad Guy‘ ever since he released it years ago. I went crazy over it and played it nonstop as a teen. One day, I messaged T-Mass regarding music and told him unconfidently, ‘Hey! If you ever need vocals, let me know! I would be more than happy to work with you.’ I then received a message back from him saying, ‘Absolutely.’ I then remembered he had that remix of ‘Bad Guy,’ so I decided to take a leap of faith and risk to ask him if I could do the vocals for this ‘Bad Guy (T-Mass Remix)’ with me knowing darn well I couldn’t sing that song even if my life depended on it, and I’m stoked about it finally getting an official release.” – Staarz

After a 1-year professional hiatus and a 6-year hiatus from the label, T-Mass makes a triumphant return to Dim Mak Records with his breathtaking cover of “Bad Guy” by the acclaimed Billie Eilish, featuring the mesmerizing vocals of Staarz. While Eilish’s original rendition of the song captivated audiences with its downtempo allure, T-Mass and Staarz ingeniously reimagine the track, infusing it with an eclectic blend of genres and an ethereal vocal style that leaves an indelible impression on listeners. Setting the stage for their innovative interpretation, T-Mass commences the cover with a subdued yet groovy house bassline, laying a solid foundation that gradually builds in intensity. As the track progresses, the listener is enveloped by a dubby, trap-style drop that skillfully weaves together an array of emotive melodies, evoking a sense of both introspection and excitement. T-Mass’s deft production techniques shine through, as he expertly melds diverse musical influences, including a subtle but captivating touch of jazz phonk, into a cohesive sonic tapestry.

Through their collaboration, T-Mass and Staarz have not only breathed fresh energy into “Bad Guy,” but they have also exemplified the boundless possibilities that arise when artists unite in pursuit of their creative passions. Their cover stands as a testament to their ability to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and create music that transcends genres and captivates the hearts and minds of listeners.
