Rebecca Foon Releases New Album Black Butterflies Out Today | Shares Focus Track + Video “If I Could Only See the Distant Sky”

Acclaimed composer, cellist, and vocalist Rebecca Foon returns with her most immersive work yet, Black Butterflies, out now via Magnolia. Blending neoclassical grace with dream–pop luminosity, the album meditates on transformation, love, and resilience — a reflective journey through a world suspended between collapse and renewal. At its core lies a profound collaboration with Patrick Watson, whose ethereal vocals and piano interplay beautifully with Foon’s voice and cello on the centerpiece track, “If I Could Only See the Distant Sky.” The result is a sonic dialogue of intimacy and transcendence, evoking a sense of quiet revelation.

The accompanying video, directed by Yishen Wang, translates that emotional depth into striking 16 mm visuals filmed on Governors Island. Featuring Foon herself, the footage pairs decaying structures and misty horizons with a grainy, timeless texture that mirrors the song’s quiet ache. Every frame feels suspended between stillness and motion, loss and longing — an atmospheric reflection of Foon’s ability to find fragile beauty in uncertainty, and to turn distance into something deeply human and alive.

The album is about quiet resilience — the strength to feel deeply, the courage to heal, and the belief that something beautiful can still take flight.”

Recorded in her Laurentians barn studio and co-produced with longtime collaborator Jace Lasek, Rebecca Foon’s Black Butterflies marks a striking evolution in her sound — merging her neoclassical roots with ambient, cinematic, and dream–pop influences. Known for her work with Esmerine, Silver Mt. Zion, and Saltland, Foon continues to expand her sonic world while staying grounded in emotional honesty and social awareness. The album’s lush arrangements of cello, piano, bass, minimalist percussion, and layered vocals invite listeners into a deeply introspective space where beauty, fragility, and resilience intertwine.

Joined by a talented circle of collaborators — including Patrick Watson, Mishka Stein, Andrew Barr, Sankara Atsilut, Bruce Cawdron, and her sister Aliayta Foon-Dancoes on violin — Foon crafts a soundscape that moves gracefully between light and shadow. The songs explore themes of love, loss, climate anxiety, and the search for meaning, balancing grief and hope in equal measure. Through its atmospheric depth and emotional sincerity, Black Butterflies becomes a meditation on transformation and the quiet strength found in vulnerability.
