London-Based Producer Art School Girlfriend Teases Upcoming Debut Album, “Is It Light Where You Are”
While we always appreciate the collaboration between musicians, there is definitely something magical about an adaptable artist. On our latest peek into the indie world we are checking out “Is It Light Where You Are”, the latest single from Art School Girlfriend. Just stepping onto the scene in the last year, this London-based multi-instrumentalist turned producer is currently priming the stage so it has a place under the lights for her when she’s ready. Created by Polly Mackey, Art School Girlfriend has already received a bit of acclaim, having released two previous singles and lending her vocal chops on Ghostpoet’s album ‘I Grow Tired But Dare Not Fall Asleep’ as well as running a monthly ambient/electronic show for Foundation FM. Going through a rather dynamic change of the last year, Art School Girlfriend is finally ready to release her full debut album, Is It Light Where You Are, on September 10th. The album isn’t just a checkpoint, as Art School Girlfriend is launching her own headling tour in the United Kingdom in support of the album!
“This is probably my favourite track and video I’ve ever released. The song wrote itself really quickly; it felt like I was chasing it. It’s based around a phone conversation with someone I was trying to get over, someone who was in a different place to me both mentally and physically. The title ‘Is It Light Where You Are’ has a double meaning: obviously time zones, but also, my world felt quite dark to me at that point and I was trying to make it light.” The single is released today alongside a fan-contributed video. “I put a call out to fans asking them to film the skyline wherever they were in the world, all at the same time — 8:30pm BST on July 2nd 2021 — to help answer the question: is it light where you are?” – Polly Mackey
I always wanted to learn an instrument when I was younger, perhaps that is why I am always enthused by multi-instrumentalists like Art School Girlfriend. Today’s single actually serves as not only the third album off of Art School Girlfriend’s upcoming album but the reveal of the album’s title track. “Is It Light Where You Are”, just like the other songs on this debut album, are ripped directly from 2019 out of Polly’s diary? The track explores a different concept depending on where you are at in your life, as while it can be as simple as crossing timezones it can also be a person in a dark place almost begging to inject some light to brighten up their surroundings. Art School Girlfriend builds upon an almost minimal bassline, creating a surreal downtempo experience with sprinklings of indie bedroom-pop. If “Is It Light Where You Are” is the kind of sound that we should expect from Art School Girlfriend, then we are super excited to check out the debut album on 9/10!
