I have been wanting to watch Let The Right One In for a very long time and I don’t know why I waited so long to do so. Finally…FINALLY we have a vampire flick that actually take vampires seriously! They are few and far between, as only 30 Days of Night comes to mind now that I think about it. They take the mysterious. blood-sucking monsters that are vampires and don’t make them glitter (F*** YOU TWILIGHT). Take away the vampires and you just have a fantastically grim story of a relationship between two preteens who no one really wants but want each other. I must give a shout out to the entire cast, as each role was performed admirably and only added to the grimness that is Let the Right One In.
Beyond that, I highly dissuade anyone to watch the American remake of Let the Right One In. While they try very hard to make it suitable for American audiences, it just doesn’t work. Let the Swedes have this one America. While the film does take the vampires seriously, it adds some ultra-dark humor to spice things up a bit. This happens when it is time for both vampires to collect blood and feed. The result? Neither one is good at it one bit. While I did find it incredibly funny, I felt that it took away from the films grim and sinister tone.
PROS:
- Serious vampires.
- Relationship analysis.
- Grim tone.
- Interesting grim take on life.
CONS:
- American remake.
- Out of place humor.
SCORE: 6.0 / 10
