Verge: “It’s mostly about how one woman must become a serial murderer in order to keep herself alive, as the only thing she can eat now is fresh human meat. Her husband and daughter love her, so they have to help her. As you might be able to guess, that situation can get pretty zany at times! Factor in the fact that their next-door neighbor is a weird, paranoid police officer and you’re in for the ride of your life!
Alright, Santa Clarita Diet…this one’s a weird one. Essentially a sitcom with a straight edge husband (Olyphant) and a zombie of a wife (Barrymore), you would expect that they would get into some rather hilarious shenanigans. That is exactly what happens and you will indeed laugh your head off. Barrymore and Olyphant carry this show with their fantastic performances, while expertly dealing with the clunky dialogue that was written. Granted though, I actually really laughed while Barrymore commented about not sleeping with her first kill, but eating one of his tiny testicles satisfactory.
While there are genuine funny moments, it also gets to the point that it is kind of awkward. Barrymore and Olyphant do a fantastic job, but it’s hard to bounce off of each other all the time. There is a weird kind of chemistry between the two, since these are not typically the roles that they should be cast in. Also, unlike the other heavily story-driven zombie shows that are on right now during our golden age of television, Santa Clarita Diet really sponges on the story. It primarily focuses on the day to day instances that the family finds themselves in rather than developing a fluid story.
PROS:
- Good, but weird chemistry.
- Hilarious dialogue.
- Genuinely funny moments.
CONS:
- Characters are dumber than they need to be.
- Rather lousy on the story.
SCORE: 7.5 / 10
