Ev. G Explores Inner Worlds and Contradictions on Debut Album ‘And Then I Go Up’ Featuring Reflective Lead Single “Allure”

When Evan first started writing the fragments that would become And Then I Go Up, he had no idea where they would go—or if anyone would even hear them. What began as quiet voice memos and bedroom demos slowly took shape over the years, thanks to a close collaboration with producers Brock Geiger and Will Maclellan. With a shared history and a lot of creative trust, the trio was free to experiment, recording the songs in places as varied as Sound City in Los Angeles, Studio B in Calgary, and the peaceful Tall Pines Studio in Temagami.

The album is both personal and open-ended, full of images and moments that feel like snapshots of memory or emotion. It’s intimate, but it also invites listeners to bring their own stories into the music. And Then I Go Up captures Evan’s journey of reflection, change, and discovery, while leaving space for anyone listening to feel a little seen in their own way.

“Anytime Brock, Will, and I were in a room together, it just felt like a good hang. Making the album over time in different settings allowed us to approach with fresh ears and figure out what the songs needed which resulted in each one undergoing some major revisions. Those were some of my favourite parts of the whole process – taking something I’d grown used to hearing a certain way, then reimagining it to serve the song in the best way we could.”

Calgary/Los Angeles-based newcomer Ev. G makes a striking debut with And Then I Go Up, an atmospheric and deeply introspective album that explores identity, inner contradictions, and the quiet transformations that shape us. Drawing on literary, mythological, and personal reflections, Ev brings a uniquely thoughtful perspective to universal experiences, balancing emotional vulnerability with artistic experimentation. Recorded over several years across iconic spaces—including Sound City in LA, Studio B in Calgary, and Tall Pines in Temagami—the album’s sonic palette evolves through collaboration with producers Brock Geiger and Will Maclellan, blending rich textures and inventive production with intimate songwriting.

At the center of the record is lead single “Allure,” written after Ev returned to music following a long hiatus, built around a hook preserved from an early voice memo that captures the tension between nostalgia and moving forward. The album features contributions from a stellar lineup of musicians, including Gabe Noel on bass, Ethan Gruska and Benny Bock on synths and keys, and Kane Ritchotte on drums, each adding depth and nuance to Ev’s vision. The result is a cohesive yet adventurous debut that is both cinematic and intimate, inviting listeners to reflect on life’s fleeting seasons while enveloping them in a lush, textured sound world.
