359_1_mg_1401Five interwoven stories that occur on the same block, on the same night. A couple finds what happens when they blow a jack o’ lantern out before midnight, a high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer, a college virgin might have met the right guy for her, a group of mean teens play a prank that they take too far, and a hermit is visited by a special trick or treater.

Oh great. Trick r Treat. I have been pushing this review for a long time, as it genuinely scared me when I first saw it years ago. Anyway lets get to the review. Trick r Treat‘s story is absolutely fantastic, earning its name as an anthology well. Creating four separate but tied in stories, the film offers genuine scares at each and every turn. The character design of the Halloween spirit is great, as he appears rather innocent at first glance but terrifying underneath. While I am embarrassed to admit I was scared watching Trick r Treat, this is one film you need to add to your Halloween viewing list.

trick-7-150933Unfortunately, just like any Halloween horror film, the film does suffer from some pretty severe drawbacks. The acting is relatively sub par, but there is no reason that it has to be impressive anyway. The film pushes the idea of Halloween traditions and it is a nice idea. Unfortunately, I consider that it falls through as it later turns into a collective of creepy myths. Way to go Trick r Treat.

PROS:

  • Genuine scares.
  • Example of Anthology.
  • Storytelling.
  • Halloween spirit design.

CONS:

  • Sub par acting.
  • Falls away from Halloween traditions trope.

SCORE: 7.5 /10
