This is the End: Actors Playing Exaggerated Versions of Themselves

THIS IS THE END

DIRECTOR: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg

GENRE: Apocalyptic Comedy

YEAR: 2013

COUNTRY: United States

Alright, the summer of 2013 has been the summer of apocalyptic comedies. This is the End and The World’s End have been probably the most popular comedies of the summer and both of the best apocalyptic comedies in the last decade. They were both released near the same time, far enough in between but still close enough to be rival films. If you want to check out my review of The World’s End, check out the link below.

This is the End is an apocalyptic comedy surrounding a weekend visit by Jay Baruchel to Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen decides to take Jay Baruchel to James Franco’s party in order for him to bond with his new friends. They are plenty of well known celebrities at James Franco’s party such as: Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, David Krumholtz, Jason Segel, Kevin Hart, Emma Watson, Aziz Ansari, Michael Cera, and Rihanna.

The apocalypse begins, and the celebrities don’t believe Jay (Since he smoked a lot of weed) until an earthquake shakes Franco’s house. All of the celebrities run outside and the majority of them die (Cera is impaled by a light post, and about ten celebrities fall into a sinkhole and die).  The rest of This is the End we follow: Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, and Danny McBride as they try to survive the apocalypse.

What I found to be the most entertaining aspect of This is the End is how the actors play exaggerated versions of themselves. This allows for a whole new area of comedy that pokes fun at the actors themselves. Since the majority of the actors are friends in real life, many of the jokes are targeted at each other in their personal lives and their careers. It is also entertaining to see all of these actors/actresses come together and portray a ridiculous famous people of Los Angeles lifestyle.

PROS:

  • Ensemble Cast
  • Personal humor.
  • Your Highness 2 anyone?

CONS:

  • Ridiculous amounts of stoner jokes.
  • Danny McBride x Channing Tatum.
  • The Rapture.

SCORE: 8.2 / 10

  • So hilarious, especially if you’ve been following these guys forever like I have been. Just every joke hit so much harder because of that reason. Good review.

    • I actually really enjoyed This is the End, I have seen the majority of their work and find it all hilarious. When the jokes were personal they were the best.
