A new Disc Jockey is shipped from Crete to Vietnam to bring humor to Armed Forces Radio. He turns the studio on its ear and becomes wildly popular with the troops but runs afoul of the middle management who think he isn’t G.I. enough. While he is off the air, he tries to meet Vietnamese especially girls, and begins to have brushes with the real war that never appears on the radio.

This film actually came highly recommended to me right after William’s passing, as it was one of his greatest films that I have not seen. This review actually should have gone up much earlier in the year, but due to scheduling it just keeps getting pushed back. Anyway, Good Morning Vietnam has to be my favorite Robin Williams performances that I have seen. The film was darker than I expected, which actually makes me even more interested in Williams’ off screen personality. Whoever wrote the film’s dialogue also played to Williams’ strengths, propelling the film to new levels.

My biggest issue with Good Morning Vietnam is the supporting characters. While the film has some decent star power, their performances are far overshadowed by Williams. Its a damn shame to be honest, but it doesn’t effect the film overall just a waste of talent. It is also a very different role for Williams but he absolutely nailed it.

PROS:

  • Robin Williams performance.
  • Blend of American and Vietnamese.
  • Comedic dialogue.

Cons:

  • Supporting cast performance.
  • Subject matter.

SCORE: 7.8 / 10
