Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

MO_D01_00075.NEF Mortdecai is one of the films i was actually excited to see this year. The film is riddled with faults and failures, but still isn’t my most hated film so far of 2015 (I’m looking at you, 50 Shades). What I recommend to the filmmaker is to go back in time to the 1950s and shoot Mortdecai with Peter Sellers. This role was completely meant for him and he might have actually been able to elevate the entire film into decency status with his performance alone.

Johnny Depp MortdecaiOh look, Johnny Depp strikes again. The worst part of Mortdecai was Johnny Depp’s performance. You know the film is going to be bad if your main star can’t even hold it together. For a comedic role, Depp is completely unfunny which ruins his entire purpose for existing in the film to begin with. Also, why was Olivia Munn in the film at all? Her character was only there for maybe two scenes that could have easily been cut. Just like all of the laughs. Maybe once the DVD is released someone will put a laugh track over all of the bad jokes in an attempt to fix it.

PROS:

  •  Stylistic looks.
  • Supporting cast.

CONS:

  •  Jonny Depp performance.
  • Unfunny comedy.
  • Shouldn’t have been filmed.

SCORE: 5.0 / 10
