Chasing Amy: Point a Guy in the Right Direction

Hello Everybody! So today’s review is about my favorite romantic comedy, Chasing Amy.

CHASING AMY

TITLE: Chasing Amy

DIRECTOR: Kevin Smith

STARRING:  Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Jason Lee, Dwight Ewell, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith

GENRE: Romantic Comedy

YEAR: 1997

COUNTRY: United States

On a whim, I decided to watch one of my favorite films from the 1990s, Chasing Amy.  For someone who has never heard/seen Chasing Amy, I would definitely recommend watching, especially in this day of age. I found that I enjoyed Chasing Amy more now that I understand the culture and other people’s life choices. I was somewhat sheltered going into my teens so it was new to me when I originally watched it in 2000.

Chasing Amy is a romantic comedy written by Kevin Smith and was released in 1997. It is the third film in the View Askewniverse, following after Mallrats and proceeding Dogma.  The film follows comic book artists and life long friends Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) and Banky Edwards (Jason Lee). Holden becomes attracted to Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams) who turns out to be a lesbian.  Holden juggles his friendship with Banky and his feelings for Alyssa throughout the film and ultimately succeeds, but only for a moment.  He tries to salvage what he has left of bother relationships and he fails.

Alright, so I am going to come right out and say that I may be a little biased, since this isn’t my first viewing.  I consider Chasing Amy to be my favorite romantic comedy. The Ben Affleck (Sorry I mean Batman) and Jason Lee do an awesome job at portraying a childhood friendship. Joey Lauren Adams does a great job coming in and fucking up their friendship.

Chasing Amy has its faults, but overall it is an enjoyable film.

PROS:

  • Analysis of relationships/friendships.
  • Counter Cultures
  • Well written/acted

CONS:

  • Jay and Silent Bob (Except SB’s monologue)
  • Romantic Comedy Cliche’s

SCORE: 7.7 / 10
